What's the difference between an elevator pitch and your Essential Message?

I might as well clear something up right away because I get asked this all the time. Is the Essential Message just like an elevator pitch? The answer is NO!!!

Your Essential message is NOT an Elevator Pitch!Elevator pitches are boring, 30-second summaries that you have to memorize, rehearse and spit out without thinking. As a result, elevator pitches end up being one-way communications that don't really engage anyone.

Your Essential Message, on the other hand, is the most compelling thing about you and your business.

It's the one thing that sets you apart from your competition. It's the very core of the value you create. It isn't just what you do; it's how you do it and why.

For individuals, your Essential Message is about being passionate about your purpose; and purposeful about your passion. It's about not having to work another day of your life. It's about finding meaning in your life's work. It's about the special way you make the world a better place. It's about your greatest value.

For start-ups and larger organizations, it's about your mission. No, not the one you drafted using generic language from a textbook -- I'm talking about the real mission that touches both hearts and minds; that creates and attracts evangelists, investors, strategic partners and customers; and again, that leverages your greatest value. For start-ups and larger organizations, The Essential Message creates a more cohesive workforce, stronger brand equity, greater sales effectiveness and the ability to outperform the market in revenue, market share and profitability.

Are you ready to start working on your Essential Message? I hope so, because it just might be the most rewarding thing you've ever done.

Essentially yours,
