E-ssential Message # 017:
What doesn't kill you makes your Essential Message stronger.

You wouldn't think that talking about your biggest failures is a good way to demonstrate your Essential Message, but that's exactly what I'd like you to consider. And if you're struggling with the balance between your strengths and vulnerabilities in leadership, this might be especially helpful to you right now.

Last year, I gave a speech to a very important audience. It didn't go well. In fact, I bombed.

I thought the audience wanted a 'traditional' style of keynote, so that's what I tried to give them. My first mistake of course was thinking that there is such a thing as a traditional style of keynote. My second mistake was trying to retrofit my material and my style to fit it. The result made it (painfully) clear what my strengths are -- I have a facilitative style of keynote that gets the audience to work through their unique challenges and make positive changes that last long after the speech has ended.

Maybe your failures gave you the single most important insight that makes you so good at what you do today? Or maybe they gave you the incentive to create an entirely new career or business and the passion you bring to it?

It takes courage and humility to talk about your failures. It shows honesty. It demonstrates hard earned expertise and wisdom when you clearly point to the lessons learned. And, it establishes credibility when explain how it has helped you shape the work you do today into your best ever.

Courage, humility, honesty, expertise and credibility -- those are pretty good qualities that anyone would want in their Essential Message.
