Message # 027: If you've read previous issues of this newsletter, you know how important it is to experiment with your Essential Message and explore different directions that you can take it in. That point really got driven home for me last weekend when I went on a solo canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness.
It started when I took a wrong turn on the drive up as I was looking for the boat launch. The next wrong turn happened at the far end of the first lake on my way to the first portage trail. Then, because the inlets in real life don't look quite like they do on the map, I paddled right past the little bay I should have turned into. And as I was beginning to lose daylight, I couldn't find the last portage trail at all and I ended up bushwhacking my way through the forest with a canoe on my head. But when I finally settled into my campsite and I was reflecting on the day, I realized that it was all good. After all, I had explored areas that I never would have seen if I had not gotten lost. In fact, if you need directions around the Kawartha Highlands or you want a guide, feel free to give me a call. Yes, I really know the territory now. So how does this relate to your Essential Message? Well, like the maps I studied before my trip, you can read all the sales and marketing books you want, but it isn't until you're out there putting it into practice that you truly learn what works for you and what doesn't. (That's why I designed Essential Message workshops to be so hands-on and interactive.) Dan Sullivan, founder of the Strategic Coach, talks about the School of a Thousand Transactions. Arnold Schwarzenegger (of all people) says that the key to success is to 'fail faster.' A friend of mine and fellow speaker Jeff Macinnis speaks about how participating in Eco-Challenge adventure races and being the first person in history to sail the Northwest Passage has taught him what he calls 'Course Correct' -- how life and business are all about setting and continuously resetting your course. I say, if you really want to find your way, you have to be prepared to get lost.
