E-ssential Message # 037:
You should be unashamed of yourself!

Based on alI the feedback I got, my last E-ssential Message really seems to have struck a chord with people. First I received this comment from an accomplished actor:

"Do I ever know what you mean when you say Impostor Syndrome. I have been an actor for 30 years and for at least 20 of those years when anyone asked me what I did I found it very difficult to say I was an actor. It took me two decades to realize that if I couldn't say I was an actor and believe it -- who the hell else was going to believe it?"

Then I got this email from a very talented graphic designer who is a partner in a creative boutique:

"My parents, eastern European immigrants, always taught me never to brag about myself. This is all good, except when you have to one day market yourself. These lessons in 'good manners' have resulted in an inability to promote and talk about myself as a professional. My first instinct, when faced with questions about myself, is to scale down and trivialize my accomplishments."

Yes, it's hard to shake deeply rooted cultural traditions and ethics. But does that mean you have to go to the other extreme and become just like the blatantly self-promoting, pop business icons that fill our media?

No. Your Essential Message isn't about being a little too full of yourself. A big part of your Essential Message is about, however, being so grounded in your own, geniune accomplishments and abilities that you instantly see where and when they meet the needs of your prospects and clients.

Only then can you talk about them naturally, confidently and -- yes -- shamelessly.

The question is, when are you going to start?
