E-ssential Message # 049:
How Bold & Outlandish Should You Be?

Mark Levy is both funny and brilliant. On the free telelcass I hosted last week in which I interviewed him, he told us how he helps his clients increase their fees by up to 2,000%

Yes, you read that right: 2,000%

Judging from the wildly positive feedback I got after the call, everybody took away a major gem (or two or three or four...) to help them build their business. When I sat back and went over everything in my head, I was able to pick out what I felt were two absolutely crucial points:

  1. Figure out what makes you so great at what you do.
  2. Build on it in the boldest and most outlandish way possible.

Step 1 is crucial, but unfortunately most people in business and sales skip it. (Coincidentally, figuring out what makes you so great at what you do is the focus of my next public workshop. Click on 'What Drives You Crazy Makes You Great!' for more information on that.)

Once you figure that out, step 2 is where you can start to have fun with it and leverage it into big money. Mark told us about one of his clients who goes to tradeshows and looks for company booths that have little or no traffic. He walks up to the most senior person there and absolutely embarrasses them by telling them what a crappy job they're doing. He then offers to demonstrate how he can attract hundreds of people to the booth -- right then and there.

In other words, he doesn't just send a letter to the marketing department and claim he can do it, he actually does it -- and then offers to do it all day for a hefty, but clearly justifiable, fee.

Of course, it takes guts to do something like that, and that's precisely the point -- when you really know what you're great at and why you're so great at it, you have the confidence to be bold and outlandish.
