Message # 061: This month, I will be awarded my 2nd degree black belt in Karate. If you've seen my keynotes or have been to one of my workshops, you know that martial arts is a major source of inspiration in everything I do. Now that I have reached this milestone, however, I see more than ever how my own martial arts training is mirrored in the Essential Message -- and how the members of the Essential Message Bull Pen go through the same stages of development and growth as I do as a 'karateka'. (The Japanese word for a practitioner of karate.) The actual belt testing was last week -- that's when the senior Senseis put us through our paces in an intense, three-hour session to make sure we deserved the promotion and were ready to grade. At the end of the testing, the head Sensei talked about what a black belt really stands for. He talked about black belt 'spirit' -- the drive, perseverance and commitment to move forward. He talked about the responsibility that goes along with the belt. Then he said something I'll never forget: "The darker your belt, the clearer your vision is of who you are as a person." In The Essential Message, we talk about gaining the clarity you need for the business you want. Block. Punch. Kick. Those are the mechanics of martial arts -- just as Impact Statements, Persuasion Drivers and Provocative Questions are the basics of your Essential Message. And, getting better sales is like earning a higher belt -- nice to have but perhaps only a by-product of your true goal. In the Essential Message, your true goal is to continually gain greater clarity about who you are, what you do and the real value that you offer your clients. That gives you more than just Black Belt confidence. Only when you know what you stand for -- whether you're an independent consultant or a multinational corporation -- can your customers and prospects know what you stand for.
