E-ssential Message # 070:
Where do you want to be -- on the portage trail or on the water?

Little did I realize when I wrote about my paddling adventures in E-ssential Message #069, that it would inspire so many readers. One reader even looked through the gallery of photos and used one of the captions I wrote, Screw the portage trail, in a way that I never anticipated as the basis for his blog.

Each of us has the power to create something that can take on a life of its own, and that could certainly be the subject of an entirely different newsletter. For this E-ssential Message, it's worth taking a minute to consider how Rick Spence took my white water adventure and created his own insight into entrepreneurship.

Rick specializes in entrepreneurship and content marketing. You can visit his blog here or read his entry from Friday, September 29, 2006 below.

Dragging our canoes across the rocksFor today's key insights into the febrile minds of entreprenurs, I present this hard-scrabbling evidence.

These pics come from an online photo album that Toronto entrepreneur Michel Neray (www.EssentialMessage.com) created of his recent canoe trip in the Ottawa Valley.

"Screw the portage trail" could stand as the timeless motto of entrepreneurs. Sure, the portage trail is likely easier, and undoubtedly safer. But it's also longer, and likely dull. If the point of a canoe trip is to be on the water, entrepreneurs want to spend as much time as they can on the water.

Impatient? Yes - though most entrepreneurs would prefer to be labelled focused.

The natural entrepreneurial inclination is to climb the rock, haul up the canoe, and get on with it. And not just because they like to work. Because they are more goal-focused than most people. They see the big picture, and are eager to bring it about.

For more tripping pictures (you can also see how they lost a paddle and improvised a new one out of sticks, which is of course another another fine entrepreneurial metaphor), click here.

Rick's piece may make you think about your own career or business path... where do you want to be -- on the portage trail or on the water?

Who is Michel Neray and What's The Essential Message?

The Essential Message is about discovering your true differentiation and then learning how to communicate it in the most compelling way. But higher sales, greater alignment of sales and marketing and a stronger brand position aren't the only reasons why so many independent professionals, entrepreneurs and emerging companies rave about The Essential Message.

Michel Neray, founder of The Essential MessageClients also say that one of the biggest advantages of the Essential Message approach is how it helps them gain the confidence, momentum and resilience that can only come from being absolutely clear about their strengths and unique difference – as companies and as individuals.

The Essential Message was created by Michel Neray based on 25 years as an award-winning copywriter, an entrepreneur, a tradeshow pitchman and a senior sales and marketing executive. (He also rides motorcycles, does whitewater canoeing, and has his 2nd degree black belt in karate.)
