E-ssential Message # 077:
A tale of two stories.

In the classic story by Charles Dickens, 'A Tales of Two Cities', one of the lead characters is an English barrister with questionable ethics. Through his love for a young woman, he is inspired to lead a better life. Her father had been deeply transformed by his imprisonment and has to be coaxed back into a normal life. In the end, the barrister sacrifices his own life in order to re-unite her with her lover. Is Blood Diamond really A Take of Two Cities? All this against the backdrop of the French revolution, showing the brutality, senselessness and desperate conditions of the times.

Replace the English Barrister with a white diamond smuggler with questionable ethics; replace the young woman with an attractive American journalist; replace the transformed father with a boy soldier who was brainwashed to kill; replace the French revolution with the civil war in Sierra Leone.... and you have Blood Diamond.

When Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) was talking on his satellite phone at the end of the movie, I fully expected his last breaths to be, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known."

After watching the movie, (which I highly recommend even if you know the ending), I couldn't help but think of the classic novel and see the fundamental similarities between the two.

And yet, they could hardly be more different.

You might have noticed there are fundamental stories that get told and re-told in different ways from ancient myth to modern film. It's like that in business too.

At the most fundamental levels, we all help our clients and customers accomplish the same things -- increase sales, lower costs, increase customer loyalty, increase productivity, or on a personal level, lead fuller, happier lives... but it’s how we do those things and how we wrap our story around it that sets us apart.

What's your story?
