For thousands of years, the story of the freeing of the Israelites from Egyption slavery has been told in Jewish homes all over the world. This tradition is carefully described in the Passover Haggadah -- the book that explains everything from the meaning of the holiday symbols to why unleavened bread (matzoh) is eaten to how the story should be told to children. The Torah itself speaks of four types of children: one is wise, one is contrary, one is simple, and one does not know how to ask. The Haggadah instructs us to tell the story differently in order to communicate the significance of the event in the most powerful and compelling way to each child. The Rabbis knew that while there was a single truth, there was no single way to communicate it. I'm quite certain those same Rabbis would have understood why elevator pitches don't work today, and they would have advised us to develop a style of communicating that recognizes the individual needs, interests and personalities of different people -- whether they're family members, co-workers, clients or prospects. Maybe The Essential Message is nothing new after all... Chag Sameach -- Happy Passover to all our Jewish friends and to freedom-loving people everywhere.
