Some people looking at this picture might wonder why I'm paddling against the current? (Yes, that's me in the picture.) More experienced paddlers would know I'm playing in the rapids.
In all sorts of places in a river are small eddies and still spots created by obstacles and collisions of competing currents. Rather than push you downriver, they actually draw you up. Even waterfalls can form backcurrents that you can sometimes safely take advantage of -- if you know what to look for.
Not only is playing in the rapids a lot of fun, it teaches you how to harness the power of the river to work with you, even when it appears to be going full force against you.
Most people want to turn and run the other way the second they hit a sales objection, a challenge or pushback. But if you look closely, you can always find the small opportunities that allow you to harness its power so it works with you, not against you.
